Essential FAQs on DEWA Connections and Disconnections in Dubai

Moving to a new home? Then you must have a lot of questions regarding connections and disconnections of electricity and water services. DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority) is a government body that distributes electricity and water services in Dubai. All necessary steps will be handled through them. Whether you need clarification on specific processes or are unsure how to get started, this blog will serve as a helpful guide. Below are some of the most common questions landlords and tenants ask about DEWA’s connection and disconnection. So, let's explore them and help you understand the process easily.

FAQs on DEWA Connections

How to get connected to DEWA?

To connect with DEWA, you have two options. Visit the DEWA website or use the DEWA smart app for the online process, or visit a DEWA customer Care Centre. Pay the security deposit and activation fees and wait for confirmation from DEWA. After approval, it will take approximately 15 hours for your electricity and water services to be connected.

What are the documents required for the DEWA connection?

You will need the following documents:

A valid Ejari number

A title deed or a tenancy contract

Valid Emirates ID

Trade license if applying as a business

What are the DEWA activation charges?

What are the DEWA activation charges?

You will need to submit AED 2,000 as a security deposit for apartments and AED 4,000 for villas. Other activation charges are:

What happens if I don’t pay my DEWA bill on time?

DEWA will give you 14 days to pay your bills after the due date and send three reminders. After that, if you still fail to pay your bills, DEWA will disconnect your connection. Once you pay your bills along with the late payment fine, DEWA will restore the connection within four hours.

What is One Step Move-in?

One Step Move-in is a streamlined process where the activation of DEWA services is automatically transferred to the DEWA system when a tenant's Ejari (leasing contract) is issued.

Do I need to submit any documents for the DEWA move-in?

No documents are required for the DEWA move-in. When an Ejari certificate is issued by RERA (Dubai's Real Estate Regulatory Agency), DEWA automatically receives the necessary customer and property information. You will immediately receive an SMS and a Welcome email from DEWA with your DEWA account details.

What to do if I don't receive a Welcome email from DEWA?

In such a case, you can apply online through the DEWA website or the DEWA Smart App.

What is DEWA’s Green Bill?

DEWA launched the Green Bill to encourage customers to switch to paperless billing. When you sign up for the Green Bill, you receive all your monthly electricity and water bills via email, which means the least amount of paper is used, and it's easy to keep track of your billing statements.

Can I easily move my DEWA connection to another location?

Unfortunately, you cannot transfer connections from one property to another. DEWA only allows a change of ownership of the utility connections to another person, but does not move them from one property to another. Whenever you change your property, you must register for the new connection, and the old one will be disconnected. Only the security deposit of the previous connection shall be returned; the new property requires a new deposit.

Conclusion

The DEWA connection and disconnection process is very smooth if you know the whole process. Customers feel satisfied through easy online processes, multiple payment options, and the ability to instantly activate and deactivate services. Knowledge of billing and deposits is useful for ensuring a smooth moving-in or moving-out process for Dubai residents. Understanding how to handle final bills, security deposit refunds, and required documents like the Demolish NOC or Final Bill Clearance can save time and avoid unnecessary hassle. DEWA’s user-friendly digital platform and efficient support make managing utilities one less thing to worry about during your move.
